Pollution is the root cause of the vast majority of hydraulic failures, that is, 75 to 85 percent of the hydraulic system is directly caused by pollution
There are two basic types of pollution: particulate pollution and water pollution.
Particle pollution: Particle pollution comes from many places in different shapes and sizes. The pollution can be measured in microns. A micron is just 390,000th the size of an inch. The smallest particles we can see with the naked eye are only about 40 microns. The particle size range that brings harm to the hydraulic system is mostly between 3 and 20μm.
